St Vincent’s Private Community Hospital Griffith’s (SVPCHG) is part of St Vincent’s Health Australia (SVHA), Australia’s largest not-for-profit provider of health and aged care services. SVPCHG is the first rural hospital within the SVHA portfolio and, because it was built in partnership with local residents, Council and major benefactors, it is very special for the local community.

Support that goes the extra mile

Contemporary hospitals, whether public or private, showcase the transformative power of technology in our lives. While we anticipate state-of-the-art medical equipment, it’s now common to see advanced technology making its way into hospital kitchens as well. Thanks to such innovations, Kathryn Farrell from Moffat was able to assist St Vincent’s Private Community Hospital in Griffith with their patient catering upgrade, all from an office located 600 kilometers away.

“Patient meals are made onsite in our modern kitchen and get delivered hot thanks to the Heat On Demand system from Aladdin Temp-Rite”

This small private hospital offers modern facilities for essential medical services, including operating theatres and care for both inpatients (20 beds) and day surgeries.

Under the supervision of Muna Pawson, the Food Services Manager, meals are prepared on-site in a recently upgraded kitchen. A team of eight staff members creates tailored meals for patients, staff, and doctors, in addition to a daily Meals-on-Wheels service for the community.

Muna notes, “There aren’t many reasons to be glad to be admitted to a hospital, but one is a healthy, tasty meal.” However, lengthy delivery times meant that some meals arrived cool. To address this issue, they implemented the Heat On Demand system.

Supplier RapidG contacted Kathryn Farrell, Moffat’s Healthcare Manager, to help Muna find a solution for hot and cold meal delivery. Given the hospital’s distance of nearly 600 kilometers from the nearest office, Kathryn conducted a digital site review with Muna.

While the hospital was using Aladdin Temp-Rite insulated bases for meal delivery, Kathryn recommended upgrading to the next level of the Aladdin Meal Delivery system. This upgrade would maintain hot meal temperatures while allowing for the reuse of the existing trolleys.

After testing the new equipment, Muna’s team found it could heat bases in 19 seconds and maintain temperatures above 60°C for over 45 minutes, ensuring safety for staff and patients.

The feedback from patients was overwhelmingly positive. “The Heat On Demand equipment really enhanced the meals by ensuring they were delivered hot,” says Muna. “It’s the perfect solution for our facility.”

IN THE KITCHEN

SVPCHG uses a Heat On Demand from Aladdin Temp-Rite, model HOD250. The advantages of this system were its ease of use and dependability, especially crucial when on-site assistance is not easily at hand. Heat On Demand doesn’t require regular technical maintenance and its solid-state electronic controls give enhanced reliability to the heating activator.

Maintenance is straightforward, and planned quarterly audits ensure the bases are functioning exactly as they should be. It’s also durable up top, thanks to its stainless-steel countertop design. With its touch-free operation, clear visual alerts and centering guide for hassle-free base insertion and removal, the Heat On Demand system is also simple to learn, and use
