Legend has it that Count Camillo Negroni asked a bartender to strengthen his cocktail one summer evening in 1919. Replacing the soda water in the classic Americano with gin instead. As a result, the Negroni is born.
Fast forwarding to the late ’70s, a busy bartender mistakenly topped up a Negroni with some off-dry Italian sparkling white rather than the gin. Hence sbagliato, meaning “mistake” in Italian, in the new cocktail’s name.
Despite the change in the ingredients overtimes, the core component in most cocktails remains as ice. Stating the obvious that it keeps the cocktail chilled but furthermore, it adds presentation value as well. Scotsman ice systems produce various ice types suitable for different venues. Gourmet ice’s slow melting rate and attractive appearance makes it the evident choice in the great Negroni Sbagliato. Scotsman ECS 56 AS is a 24 kg Self-contained ice maker, which is very popular with pubs and bars due to its compact footprint and built-in storage bin!
Fancy adding a little spark in this festive season anyone?
Negroni Sbagliato
Ingredients:
- 30mL Italian sweet vermouth
- 30mL Italian aperitif bitters
- 30mL Prosecco or sparkling brut
- Gourmet ice
- Slice of orange or a twist of orange peel
Method:
- Mix sweet vermouth and aperitif bitters in a shaker with crush ice
- Strain it into a fancy old fashion glass over gourmet ice
- Top it with Prosecco or sparkling brut
- Garnish with a slice of orange or a twist of peel
Fancy a twist?
- Firmly hold an orange in your palm
- First of all, dig just deep enough to cut a strip with a knife on the surface. Then make sure there is not much of white pith.
- Add a bit of extra kick by twisting the peel over the drink. Twisting it releases the essential oils in the peel, which has a powerful and refreshing flavour and aroma.
